An Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) sighting occurred this week when a strange light was spotted in the vicinity of the St. Louis landmark, the Gateway Arch. Along with several reports, at least two videos of the UFO phenomenon has also surfaced. It sent the internet into a speculative frenzy and has yet to be definitively explained.

Huffington Post reported that the St. Louis Gateway Arch, the famed construction dedicated to America’s westward expansion toward the Pacific coastline, was a trending topic on Twitter most of Thursday due to the sighting of what is being described as a “mysterious” blinking light that seemed to hover over and descend toward the Arch. The thus far unexplained UFO was captured on several videos, including footage shot by a park surveillance camera and a man taking his nightly work break, both of which were subsequently posted to social media.

According to KTVI in St. Louis, which broadcast the surveillance video, the Gateway Arch UFO was also spotted and captured to video by Chase Rhoads, an independent cleaning consultant from Illinois. He sent the station a copy of his video as well as posting it to his Facebook page.

The surveillance video, which was shot from Malcolm W. Martin Memorial Park (located in East St. Louis across the Mississippi River from the Gateway Arch) between 2:30 and 3 a.m. on Tuesday, August 2, was produced at 1000 times normal speed and shows a glowing object, a light, descending from the top of the video toward the Arch itself. The object appears to blink on and off during its descent, while the sky lights up intermittently with heat lightning. The Gateway Arch is seen only as a shadowy piece of a crescent extending only a little way into the air at the video’s bottom right corner.

The park surveillance video begins with the caption, “Unexplained Lights over St. Louis – We guarantee you will be perplexed if you watch all 5 minutes of this surveillance footage!”

Rhoads’ video, which is just over 90 seconds long, is from street level and shows a bright light flashing strobe-like and hovering over a ghostly Gateway Arch. The caption to the post observed: “So what is this flashing over the arch??? As soon as I stopped tapping it went away just stopped… it’s not moving it was still the whole time… Hmmm…”

In narrating the video, he says the light “just showed up.” He adds, “Wonder what that could be?”

Rhoads told KTVI in a separate report that he’d been in the park every night for a month and had never seen anything above the arch. “It didn’t fly over, it didn’t do any of that,” he said of the Gateway Arch UFO. “It just appeared.”

KTVI reported that the station reached out to the National Park Service for comment. A National Park Service representative said that the service had received no reports of strange lights and no one had seen anything on that particular morning.

KTVI also made a call to nearby Scott Air Force Base. The military, the station noted, had “found nothing out of the ordinary to report as well and no concerned phone calls.”

However, although the light has been interpreted as strange and otherworldly by some, others have a different view, suggesting the object was a Chinese lantern or perhaps a drone. Ed Mazza at Huffington Post wrote, “It’s not clear what the object was, although it moved and hovered much like a drone.” Jared Hill, commenting on the Malcolm W. Martin Memorial Park, posted, “It was a drne [sic] with a unidirectional light on it,” then explained what was being misconstrued as a UFO. “Cool vid, tho,” he added.

Fox News reported that the recent St. Louis Gateway Arch UFO sighting isn’t the first, nor is it the first to be captured by that particular camera at Malcolm W. Martin Memorial Park. In July 2016, the same surveillance camera also caught a UFO that appeared in broad daylight.
