Video captures ‘blue light’ hovering over east Valley

MESA, Ariz. – A peculiar video came into the 12 News newsroom Monday showing an unidentified light floating in the sky over the east Valley.

Viewer Matthew Van Hoose said he captured the video Sunday night around Alma School and the US 60.

The video shows a faint, blue light, as Van Hoose calls it, hovering in the sky before descending. He said it hovered again before descending out of sight.

Van Hoose said he submitted the video to the National UFO Reporting Center which instructed him to contact local media outlets.

He did just that.

Our first question: Could it be traffic from Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport?

Matthew said he can see airport traffic from where he is, but has never seen a blue light like the one in the video.

So, was it a UFO? The answer: Yes and no.

Most associate a UFO with aliens, so in that sense, no. But until the object in the sky is identified, it is, by definition, an “unidentified flying object.”

12 News reached out to the FAA — a spokesperson said there hasn’t been any “unusual aircraft activity” in the area.
